Spring is in the air! Temps are warming up, the sun is coming out more often, and- oh no! All your photos are outdated! Thankfully, it's very easy to find a photographer. Make a post in your local mom group or do a Google search and you'll find that the options can be very overwhelming. Don't fret: here's a guide on how to find the perfect photographer for you!
The two biggest things you need to consider are your style preference, as well as your budget. It's important to remember that you're paying for a luxury service, and most often you get what you pay for.
If you're looking for a cheap deal, I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding a friend of yours who just got a DSLR camera and would love to snap some photos of you and your family. No shame- that was me at some point! You'll likely be spending between $20-$75 for a beginner photographer who's eager to build their portfolio. They'll likely schedule your session, do your photos and send you your digitals. Boom. Done.
If you're looking for a specific style make sure you check through their portfolio so you can see what to expect. Is their style consistent? If so, it'll make knowing the quality of photos you receive a breeze. If not, it's more of a gamble. Especially since due to the nature of digital images refunds are rarely given by photographers. Some photographers prefer more light and airy images, some prefer more filmy images, some prefer to go more moody. It's important to make sure you LOVE their style before hiring your photographer.
There are many different business structures for photographers. The new digital age has brought new methods of doing business to the world of photography. Some do digitals, some do prints, a mixture, some meet you in person to show you your photos, some send them digitally, etc. What are your priorities? Do you want professional quality prints that will stand the test of time? Do you want digitals to print as you please? It's important to select a photographer that will meet those needs! Luckily, I offer both prints and digitals!
Do you want everything included in the initial price or do you want to pay a session fee and wait to see the photos before deciding what you want?
If you're on a tighter budget, some photographers will offer payment plans (like me!) and will work with you on a plan.
One final thing to consider is the experience. Do you want to feel like your needs have been heard? One person's needs are different than the next and no session is the same. Working with a professional photographer should be an amazing experience in which both parties are invested in the process. This is a benefit to working with an actual business owner rather than a hobbyist photographer.
Are you ready to choose your photographer? Do you want an amazing experience in which you feel taken care of as a client and a friend? Do you want beautiful prints on your walls or digitals on your hard drive? Have a tight budget, and want to do a payment plan?
